Bio and Contact Info

Bob Sterling was born in Atlantic City and raised in the suburb of Ventnor. His father Frank played violin and tenor saxophone professionally. Through his father's encouragement, Bob developed his love for music, as well as his "ear."

At age 7, Bob watched "The Beatles" perform on The Ed Sullivan Show. That's when he knew the guitar would be his instrument of choice. As a child, Bob took lessons from Carmen Grove at Irv's Music Shop in Atlantic City. He was also fortunate enough to study music theory with pianist George Mesterhazy, who Bob considers a friend and mentor.

Attending a local junior college, Bob studied chord melody with Dennis McCorkle, a student of the great Dennis Sandole's master class that included jazz great Pat Martino.

Bob started working professionally at age nineteen in local dance clubs, The Melody Lounge,Tony Mart's and Little John's, as well as jazz clubs like The Last Resort, Camillo's and The Copper Bay Saloon. Later, Bob worked for Michael Pedicin, Jr. as a house guitarist playing for headliners such as Lou Rawls, Billy Ekstein, Dionne Warwick and Bobby Vinton and opening acts at the Tropicana Casino in Atlantic City. He relished playing with such a large, highly regarded orchestra. In addition to the above, Bob worked in several elaborate casino production shows, such as Clint Holmes "Celebration," which ran for three years at the Sands Casino, and he also played Georgetown's Blues Alley Jazz Club.

For the past thirteen years, while Bob has been working with the Jerry Boyle Orchestra, he set off to pursue his real passion since he first began playing... that is to compose and arrange his own music. In 2001, he released "PIER PRESSURE" under his name and received instant acclaim and airtime for the upbeat jazz/rock fusion powerhouse. The compositions were written by Sterling and have an interesting harmonic structure, tied together by catchy melodies. The CD features producer bassist Wade Matthews, drummer/percussionist, Bob Farina and pianist, George Mesterhazy, and the end result is a CD which reaches a vast audience, covering the spectrum of music tastes. Sterling is currently working on his next CD as well as performing college concerts and outdoor music festivals. His next concert is scheduled for Friday evening, November 2nd at Dante Hall in Atlantic City, NJ. Call (609) 344-8877 or go to dantehall.org.
